South Africa – 1, Mexico – 1
Holding it proudly aloft I thought “what a great World Cup moment”. But enough about my pint of Dorada, the hype was finally over and I joined a group of mainly South Africans at Legends Bar in Los Cristianos for the opening game of World Cup 2010, South Africa v Mexico. With the vavazelas buzzing like a swarm of angry hornets it was all hope and passion for the hosts but little end product. Mexico looked useful but couldn’t score, ten minutes into the second half Tshabalala (a very poor hand in scrabble) hit a great shot into the roof of the Mexico net to send the crowd wild – well they buzzed even louder. Maybe a home miracle could happen, mexico had other ideas and with 10 minutes to go a neat slice from Marquez tied the game for Mexico.
France – 0, Uruquay – 0
There’s always a t least one early round snooze fest and this was it, the French flair was missing and they failed to kill Uruquay off even when Lodiero became the first sending off for the finals after a stupid lunge of a tackle. not much to shout about in this game but it was amusing to see Thierry Henry sqeal for a handball decision late on in the match. I thought the constant buzzing of the vuvuzelas would be just for the home nation games but it was here as well and getting damm annoying, how much money will TV repair men make from old people calling them out to deal with the strange buzzing coming from their set.
