As England shivered in an icy grip Vicki Hearsey and Martin Pawson from Market Rasen sipped another cool drink on the terrace at the 4 star Hotel Las Aguilas just above Puerto de la Cruz. Of course they were affected by the snow, they had trouble taking their eyes of the glistening snow capped peak of Mount Teide, a sight that greeted them through their window during their week’s stay.

“It’s very posh and the views from here are stunning,” was the first reaction from Vicki the delighted winner of one of our regular Tenerife Magazine prizes. The timing of their booking, they had a year to use the prize, was immaculate as temperatures plunged below freezing back home but as I walked through the 10,000 square metres of hotel gardens with the couple it was a sunny 24 degrees. A group of water aerobics enthusiasts were enjoying the largest of the two swimming pools and butterflies were sampling the flowers and plants.
We stopped for an afternoon meal outside the Mirador Restaurant, the barman was already on first name terms with Vicki and Martin, well the staff are a friendly bunch. That got us talking about the hotel food. “We’ve used the Amaltea Restaurant inside every night,” enthused Vicki. “It’s a buffet service but there’s always a good choice with a carvery and local fish plus a salad bar and a choice of breads and cheeses.” I learnt that the cava and tempting puddings had also been nightly favourites.
There was a nice relaxed mood as many guests had taken advantage of the regular shuttle coach into Puerto de la Cruz but they would return later for food and nightly entertainment. “The Vulcano Bar offers different live acts each night, and bingo in three languages was quite a challenge, but the bar prices are very reasonable,” added Vicki. “It’s a lovely place and even though there were activities every day and tennis and padel courts, we really enjoyed chilling out and relaxing in the sun and taking in the views. It was just what we needed before the mayhem of Christmas and New Year.”
