Walk for Life

The Canarian Foundation Carrera por la Vida – Walk for Life has been chosen by the Think Pink Europe network, as the solo Spanish organiser of the RACE FOR THE CURE, the most far-reaching digital race ever organised across the continent of Europe.   The Think Pink Europe network brings together multiple associations and initiatives from 30 different countries, whose primary aim is to fight breast cancer.

The Canarian Foundation Carrera por la Vida – Walk for Life is a charity initiative, and has been working for 15 years to raise awareness and funds.   The monies raised are targeted at  numerous  associations, services, healthcare initiatives and research projects, in order to improve the quality of life of people affected by breast cancer and allow both, physical and psychological recovery within the shortest possible time.

Funding for the Foundation relies on the activities developed by the volunteers and on the donations from institutions, collectives and companies. The COVID 19 health and economic crisis has meant that most of the activities programmed by the Foundation have been impossible to carry out and has also meant the cancellation of the 16th Walk for Life, which usually brings together over 5,000 people in a great pink tide of solidarity uniting the Adeje and Arona boroughs in the south of Tenerife.

With the motto ‘This year we walk with our heart’ the president of the Carrera por la Vida/Walk for Life Foundation, Brigitte Gypen, says that “ this year the way we walk will be different but the objective remains the same: to raise funds and awareness on behalf of and for people affected by breast cancer”.  That’s why people will be joining the  RACE FOR THE CURE, a virtual walk that will take place on the 25th, 26th and 27th of September and will connect 30 European countries digitally through a global platform. Participants will support and join the most important world-wide digital event for people with breast cancer. They will join through social media and participate from their city or town, or village, together with their families and friends while still following the current health and safety regulations.

The starting shot will be fired from Wednesday, the 15th of July, and the registration period for the great digital race will open. The COVID 19 sanitary crisis has led to a socioeconomic situation that directly affects the most vulnerable sectors of the population, including  people recently diagnosed or being treated for breast cancer, who have seen their family economy further aggravated due to their sick leave, reduced income or even redundancy or disability. President Brigitte Gypen reminds people that “breast cancer has not stopped occurring, people affected and projects still need support, so we ask families, institutions and companies to participate in this virtual race and walk with their hearts, now more than ever”.  From the 15th of July until the 25th of September, the participants can sign up and make the regular €5 donation online at www.carreraporlavida.org by filling in a simple form and they will be able to obtain their unique individual dorsal number to join this digital race. This will be the biggest virtual worldwide event in support of people affected by breast cancer.
