Tenerife Magazine’s round up of some of the most interesting news stories of the week in Tenerife.

It’s Party Month in Santa Cruz
It’s not news as such, but it’s worth remembering that May is the month that Santa Cruz celebrates the founding of the city. The city’s May Fiestas programme is overflowing with a month long agenda of events that includes dancing, processions, street parties, parades, art exhibitions, floral displays, sporting competitions and much melodic music from traditional Canarian bands to rock and pop. There’s something taking place on the streets of the capital every day of the month, but weekends are the best time to visit. Full details of all the goodies happening can be found here…except for those taking place on the final weekend where the design on the official programme seems to have gone horribly wrong.

An Accident Waiting to Happen?

Following the heavy rainfall over Easter weekend, residents and businesses in Los Cristianos have criticized the local council for not taking appropriate action to prevent the flooding that devastated the market and some streets in the town. A residents” association claimed that they’ve been warning the council for years about the risk of flooding from water rushing down from three ravines above the town. To be fair, the council did carry out some work a few years ago in a bid to prevent Los Cristianos turning into a mini Venice, but some say that it was a botched job. Many believe that more money should have been invested in making the town safe from flooding rather than being spent on luxuries like a fancy fountain at the entrance to the town. If that had happened Los Cristianos might not have ended up with two…ahem…water features.

Titsa on Your Mobile
Anyone who doesn’t know the name of Tenerife’s public bus company might be a tad disappointed when they access this new service on their iPhone. But for everyone who uses Tenerife’s buses it sounds like a welcome step forward. The new app (accessed via www.titsa.com ) can apparently identify where the user is and tell them where the nearest bus step is, how long it is before the next bus arrives, what buses to catch to get to various parts of the island, fares and what the driver just ate for lunch (okay that one’s a lie). It all sounds fab, but will it work? Over to TM’s Colin Kirby to investigate.

Flowers From Tenerife
As a nice touch for Mother’s Day in Spain (1st May), the Canarian government arranged for 5,000 stunning birds of paradise flowers (strelitzias) to be distributed to towns in Spain’s northern regions. As well as brightening up día de la madre, a little sticker on each promoting the Canary Islands as a holiday destination acted as a subliminal form of advertising. That’s one way to say it with flowers

And finally the TIT (This Is Tenerife) of the week award goes to…Los Realejos

Who, despite the lovely Playa de Castro being closed to the public for nearly two years, continue to showcase its beauty as a promotional main photo on their tourist website. Now that is just plain teasing us.
