Plot: When beautiful, over protected young ballerina Nina (Natalie Portman) replaces Beth (Winona Ryder) as prima ballerina for a production of Swan Lake, she discovers that preparing for the role of both white and black swan requires her to explore a much darker side to her personality in order to play the role to perfection. The arrival of Lily (Mila Kuna), a brilliant newcomer threatens Nina’s position and the lines between reality and fantasy blur as Nina fights to realise her dream of playing the Swan Queen
TM Rating: The subject matter of a ballerina company may be off-putting to some; it shouldn’t be. Whilst Black Swan offers a raw and sometimes painful insight to the outwardly elegant world of the ballerina, it is also a dark, seductive and tense psychological thriller about the consequences of delving into the dark side of the human psyche (think Star Wars in tutus”¦without the escapism).
Nominated for a clutch of Oscars including Best Actress, Best Film and Best Director, Black Swan exudes quality, elegance and class and Natalie Portman gives a flawless career best performance in the role of the innocent, or not so innocent, Nina.
Anyone familiar with the movies of Black Swan’s director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, The Fountain) won’t be surprised to find a movie which has similarities in style and feel to both. With Aronofsky you know that you’re going to get a movie that is beautiful to look at, commands the attention and is thought provoking”¦but one that will also be completely unpalatable to some people.
Black Swan is beautiful, dark, sexy and occasionally uncomfortable viewing. Movie fans should love it; fans of undemanding fluff will hate it.
