England 1, USA 1
Whoops, not quite according to plan, England turned a deam start into a nightmare after Robert Green failed to hold onto the ball and let the USA grab a draw in a low key start. I watched in The Merry Monk in Los Cristianos and it was packed, elation after 4 minutes as Steven Gerard scored for England – but we didn’t see it. ITV HD cut away from the action to an advert and cut back just in time to see the players celebrating-thanks a bunch.
Then came Greens gaffe and Dempsey got a gift goal, even here in Tenerife I could hear the whole scottish nation chuckling. At half time the TV panel speculated what the troops in Afganistan would be making of it, I reckon they were thinking good job Robert Green isn’t in the bomb disposal squad.
South Korea 2, Greece 0
The Greeks were left looking bankrupt off ideas as Korea cashed in on some good football. A goal in each half from Lee Jung Soo and Man Uniteds Park Ji Sung wrapped up an impressive display.
Argentina 1, Nigeria 0
Looking like a tramp that had just found a shiny suit, Maradona prowled the touchline stroking a beard that he had just found in the dressing up box. Argentina strolled and should have won easily but for poor finishing and a strong Nigeria goalie. It was left to Heinze to break the deadlock with a well taken free header in yards of open space. Messi showed some divine touches, a taste of more to come. I was hoping to see the game at Argentinian bar Cosas Ricas in Los Cristianos but they didn’t have the game on. Four years ago they had a giant screen and it was jumping for every game – a sign of the times ?
