Starring: Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Timothy Dalton
Plot: Beautiful, sexy Elise (Angelina Jolie) latches on to “˜ordinary’ tourist Frank (Johnny Depp) on a train travelling from Paris to Venice in a bid to dupe pursuing police and gangsters into believing that he is her fugitive boyfriend. Everyman sightseer Frank immediately finds himself embroiled in a web of subterfuge, life-threatening danger and glamorous locations”¦but hey, he’s got Angelina at his side, so that makes getting shot at all worthwhile.
TM Rating: First of all let’s get one thing out of the way ““ Johnny Depp as your average tourist? Yeah right, Playa de las Américas is just full of Johnny Depp look-alikes.
Still this isn’t a film that is meant to be taken too seriously. It’s a fairground attraction of a movie; exciting and lots of fun but you’ll forget about it by the time you move on to the next ride. A mix of Hitchcock, the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz vehicle Knight and Day and a perfume commercial, The Tourist looks good enough to eat and the two glamorous stars are complimentary additions to Venice’s chic good looks. There are twists galore as the plot races along like a tourist on a whistle stop tour of Venice and Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton and shadowy Rufus Sewell all provide diverting support. Ultimately though, this is a slice of tiramisu; it looks good, tastes good and is wonderfully light”¦but Johnny and Angelina just don’t sizzle like Brad and Angelina in Mr & Mrs Smith. Cue relieved sigh from Vanessa Paradis
6/10 ““ Escapist fun that, with Angelina, Johnny and Venice starring, is a delicious treat for the eyes and at the same time a little rest for the brain.
