Starring: James Franco, Treat Williams
Plot: Aron Ralston (James Franco) is a Jackass generation adventurer who takes risks that anyone who possessed a modicum of common sense wouldn’t dream off taking. Whilst ‘adventuring’ in the great Utah outdoors, an attempt to hike up the thrill factor results in Aron falling down a crevice and having his arm crushed and trapped by an immovable boulder. From then on a carefree adventure becomes a fight for survival.
TM Rating: On paper, the idea of spending nearly 94 minutes watching a man trapped down a hole might not sound enthralling viewing. Especially when the man we’re watching is a self-confident eejit (make no mistake that’s what Aron is) coming to terms with the fact that his quest for carefree “˜fun’ has come with a price tag he could never have imagined.
But before you decide this doesn’t sound like your type of movie there are a couple of things worth knowing. 127 Hours is a true story. What happens to Aron is well documented (I’m not going to tell you, so if you Google it to find out that’s up to you) and how his predicament unfolds makes this much more than just an incredible tale of youthful folly. The second is that 127 Hours is directed by Danny Boyle. Just as he turned a story of abject poverty, child torture and prostitution”“ Slumdog Millionaire ““ into an uplifting experience a couple of years ago, he turns this cautionary tale into an upbeat riff on a battle for survival that also charts one young man’s 127 hour journey from arrogant, immortal youth to the painful (for him and the audience) realisation that life is finite.
127 Hours is exciting, enthralling, poignant and shocking”¦very shocking. Be prepared to be moved.
9/10 ““ An unexpected but welcome choice for Valentine week. 127 Hours is one of those movies that is both thrilling and thought provoking. It cuts deep into the consciousness leaving a ragged open wound. Walking in Tenerife’s mountains might not appeal for a wee while after watching this one.
