Starring: Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Jon Hamm, Matt Lucas

Plot: Single, thirty-something Annie (Kristen Wiig) is asked by best friend Lillian to be Maid of Honour at her wedding but the bitchy wife of Lillian’s fiance’s boss also has her eye on the role leading to a comic power struggle that threatens friendships…

TM Rating: Last week we had a buddy movie for guys…and aliens. This week it’s the other end of the see-saw. Bridesmaids” synopsis is enough to bring on an attack of the yawns. It has fluffy, chick flick written all over it and sounds as though it’s going to have about as much substance as a stick of candy floss.

But to write it off as such would be a mistake. Bridemaids‘ producer is Judd Apatow of Superbad and The 40 Year-Old Virgin fame, so a typical fluffy rom-com was never likely. If anything this is the female version of the massive comedy hit, The Hangover. This is a movie about relationships but not in the usual rom-com style. The most important relationships in Bridesmaids are those between the female characters

These women don’t behave like the one dimension characters of most rom-coms and they don’t have the bottomless pockets of the characters in films like Sex & The City ““ i.e. they dress and act like real people (real people in the movies at least), especially down to earth Annie who is the film’s focal point. Although the plot doesn’t sound particularly sophisticated, Bridesmaids” strength lies in some genuinely funny scenes (an attack of food poisoning in a bridal shop, a cringe-worthy but funny plane journey) as well as the sharp and sometimes bitchy dialogue between the female protagonists as they tackle life, love and friendship whilst planning the perfect wedding.

Bridesmaids may be aimed at a female market, but its slick (sometimes sick), snappy humour should appeal to everyone.

7/10
““ It’s not the most thought provoking film of the year but the characters are likeable, the script witty, the comic situations funny and it’s also got Mad Men’s Don Draper.
