Arriving at the tail end of a tropical storm I was still looking forward to a round at Golf Costa Adeje, an old west coast favourite that I have neglected in recent years. An invite from John Beckley of Sorted Sites was all I needed to bring back memories of this Tenerife championship course, I was hoping it was in as good a condition as last time I played it.

It was uncharacteristically windy but dry, so much so people were cancelling their rounds, normally at Golf Costa Adeje and on the west coast it is relatively wind free and golfing conditions are perfect. That said us Scots are made of sterner stuff and John and I teed off first at 8.02am on a Tuesday morning.

We skipped the first as there was a four ball of Germans determined to make a day of their round and as we had one of the courses new solar buggies we went on to the second hole a Par 3 of 125 meters normally a 9 Iron for me but I hit a pitching wedge and knocked it 25 meters over the green, this wind may cause us some problems.

I did noticed as we drove our buggy up the first fairway, Adeje had changed all the sand in the bunkers , gone was the black volcanic rock sand and in was beautiful white quartz sand far nicer and manageable to play out of.

We reached the fourth hole a par 4 of 420 meters, a real treat to play and well worth a mention, its a downhill sloping fairway all the way to the green, a green that looks as if its been cut into the ocean and surrounded by palm trees”¦ Just spectacular ! Since I last played here all the greens have all been re-laid and are “rolling” fast and true and in the wind we experienced the day we played very tricky if you weren’t careful. With no one in front we were playing at a good pace so 3.5 hours saw us round the course.

We played match play and I gave young John a shot at all the holes except the Par 3’s and it was a very tight match with me one hole up standing on the 18th tee a long Par 5 of 496 meters. Playing down the 18th back towards the splendid clubhouse.I managed to hole out for a par, with John on the sculptured green for 4 but 25 feet from the hole, defeat was staring him in the face, a half was no good to him so he had to sink the putt to half the match. He pulled the putter back and gave it a good rattle, the ball set off towards the hole, as if by magic ! the hole jumped out and caught his ball. A par for John, less his shot, meant he won the hole and the match was halved a good outcome to a great day. Well done young man I enjoyed it.

I have been lucky enough to be asked back to a full hole by hole course review so look out for that in the future. I will also have some important information for fan’s world wide of Costa Adeje Golf Course, and there are many, about some future course improvements that will make this facility even better”¦
