Starring: Denzel Washington, Chris Pine
Plot: Due to human error of apocalyptic proportions an unmanned train full of deadly toxic waste is out of control and heading towards the city of Stanton like a half-mile long ballistic missile. With time and options to stop the train running out, veteran engineer Frank (Denzil Washington) and apprentice Will (Star Trek’s Chris Pine) find themselves on board and customers at the last chance saloon as Stanton’s only hope in averting a catastrophic disaster.
TM Rating: Director Tony Scott has an admirable pedigree in directing action movies. Some hit the mark (Man on Fire, Crimson Tide), others fizzled (The Taking of Pelham 123, Domino). Unstoppable isn’t up there with his best, but it is good rip roaring fun all the way down the line. Plus it features Scott’s favourite actor, the ever likeable and dependable Denzel Washington. This time out he’s the veteran train driver tasked with saving a city, aided and abetted by rookie newcomer Chris Pine; the guy who won us over when he out-Shatner’d William Shatner as Captain Kirk in Star Trek.
There’s nothing particularly predictable in Unstoppable; people commit really stupid errors and outrageous decisions are made, based on saving money, that just add to the problem of stopping a runaway train without taking out half the country whilst two ordinary Joe’s to try to save the day.
Along the way Tony Scott tries to make the journey as real as possible. So, in an attempt to bring the audience on board, the camera jumps and jives along with the runaway train ““ not a film to watch if you suffer from travel sickness ““ as it careens down the winding track towards its unstoppable (?) fate.
7/10: Escapist cinema that roars along at a fast, frantic pace as it eats up the track. You won’t have to engage the brain much, just sit back and enjoy the ride”¦if you can actually sit back – this is edge of the seat fun.
