Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, Cristophe Waltz

Plot: Itinerant veterinary student Jacob (Twilight’s Robert Pattinson) links up with a run down circus where loses his heart to glamorous animal trainer Marlena (Reese Witherspoon) and a depressed elephant (well it is set in the Great Depression). Standing in the way of true love is Marlena’s husband the sometimes charming, sometimes sadistic August (Inglourious Basterd’s Christophe Waltz). Be prepared for all the thrills of the ciircus.

TM Rating: This is the kind of movie that ‘they don’t make anymore’. Circus movies have long fallen out of fashion…much like their subject matter. But throw in one of the hottest broody young stars around, Robert Pattinson playing another moody lovestruck character; Reece Witherspoon sizzling in outfits that look as though they’d burn if you touched them and, best of all, Christophe Waltz playing another borderline psychopath who can charm and harm in the blink of an eye and you’ve got an enjoyable piece of nostalgic hokum. Oh and don’t forget the ‘aaah’ inducing melancholic elephant of the title who tugs at those heart strings more than any of the human leads.

Although Water for Elephants is mainly a love story it has as many colourful sideshows as your average circus, so you get a good mix of murder, mayhem, dastardly deeds and tragedy for the price of your entrance ticket to the big tent.

This might not be the greatest show on earth any longer, but it’s still quite diverting to watch.

7/10 ““ a curiously old fashioned tale of love and death in the ring that, although it comes up with nothing new, is as entertaining as a visit to the circus.
