Starring: George Clooney

Plot: A mysterious American hit man, Jack (George Clooney) is advised to lie low in an historic Italian town for reasons that are ambiguous at best. Posing as an architectural photographer he strikes up relationships with a prostitute, a priest and a beautiful female assassin. However, as everybody knows, it’s impossible in movie land for anyone involved in the murky world of professional assassination to stay hidden from those that are out to get them…

TM Rating: Some people will have seen all they need to know to make them decide whether this is a film worth seeing by reading two words ““ George Clooney. Apart from being the world’s most handsome and charming man, he is always eminently watchable. But there are a couple of things about The American that may either attract you to it, or have you huffing and puffing that you’ve just been duped. The trailer sells it as a thriller, and it is ““ just not a typical fast-paced one. Directed by Anton Corbijn, crafter of the excellent Control about Joy Division’s Ian Curtis, The American is more of a study of the internal demons that Jack may be battling. As such the camera sticks to Clooney’s face like a magnet, registering every subtle emotion the hitman we know very little about is experiencing. With its ponderous pace and exquisite photography, The American has as much in common with European art house as it does conventional thriller.

7/10 ““ Anyone expecting a fast-paced action thriller is going to be disappointed. There are a lot of things about The American that are not explained; the audience being left to fill in the gaps themselves. However, film fans who enjoy movies that are beautifully shot, intelligently crafted and make you fire up the grey cells should be pleasantly surprised. Oh…and did I mention, it stars George Clooney?
