Here at Tenerife Magazine, as well as helping you to discover the very best of what this wonderful island has to offer, we also love to support great causes. Too often the mainstream media paints a picture of doom and gloom around the world. So much of the news that we are shown on TV and in newspapers suggests that people have lost all humanity and simply don’t care about each other. In fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth, as shown by the much loved and well attended Carrera por la Vida/ Walk for Life event here in Tenerife. What’s more, this year’s event was the most popular and well attended yet!
Instead of society becoming apathetic about important issues, this shows that huge numbers of people care more than ever and are prepared to come together to prove this in support of great causes. At this year’s Carrera por la Vida there were 4,500 people who went on the walk, with over 20.000€ raised for charity! This was an absolute record for this well loved event that is great for all the family, with kids and adults of all ages taking part. There were also more volunteers this year than in previous years which was also fantastic to see.
Carrera por la Vida/ Walk for Life was originally started and organised 13 years ago by the hugely dedicated Brigitte Gypen to help raise money and awareness for treatment for breast cancer. While this remains the main focus of the money donated, funds were also raised this year for other hugely important charities: Km Solidario (aecc cancer bus), Amate (Asociacion de Cancer de Mama de Tenerife), and Fero (cancer research on liquid biopsy). Money was also raised for the Foundation Walk for Life project which will be presented in the next few weeks; a new project that will benefit all those who have suffered from mastectomy.
What this large and growing turnout has proved once again is how important an issue this is for people across Tenerife. Cancer is a terrible disease that is estimated will affect one in two people in their lifetimes across the world. Events such as the Carrera por la Vida/ Walk for Life are absolutely vital for raising donations to help fund research to combat this disease and raise awareness on how to catch it early for more effective treatment.
Once again we would like to offer a huge thanks from all of the team here at Tenerife Magazine to Brigitte Gypen and her team and all of the volunteers for organising such an excellent event. The positive spirit of everyone taking part was so clear to see, with a party like atmosphere enjoyed by all along the whole walk. We are sure that this event will continue to go from strength to strength, gaining in popularity and increasing donations for this worthy cause.
It should be noted that donations are supervised by a Notary – this year it was Don Nicolas Castilla Garcia – who also attended on a voluntary basis on the day.
