Starring: Rowan Atkinson, Gillian Anderson, Dominic West
Plot: Older, greyer but none the wiser, disgraced spy Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) is called back into action from a remote Tibetan Monastery to help foil a plot to assassinate the Chinese Premier…but will he turn out to be more of a hindrance than a help?
TM Rating: 5 years down the line from his last misadventure Johnny English is reluctantly called back into action, but only because a crucial informant will deal only with him. In real time it’s 8 years since Rowan Atkinson’s last outing as Britain’s bumbling idiot of a spy. The first film was relatively successful despite being not particularly good (Rowan Atkinson fans will probably disagree).
Now Johnny English has been reborn but is the new Johnny English an improved version? Johnny English Reborn plays it all that bit straighter than the first movie which works better and there are scenes that could border on the tense. In the end though, Johnny English Reborn is a vehicle for Rowan Atkinson’s comedic talents and rubber-faced gurning. He’s the comic turn whilst a good solid cast provide the foundation for his various exploits which range from motorised wheelchair chases to battling a vacuum cleaner wielding assassin to Johnny English’s hands fighting each other; all of which are mildly amusing or laugh out loud funny depending on individual comic tastes.
There’s nothing original about Johnny English Reborn, in fact in some ways it’s more Johnny English Rehash but it’s likeable nonsense that children and Rowan Atkinson fans should enjoy.
6/10 ““ It’s Johnny English, It’s Rowan Atkinson so you should know exactly what to expect ““ slapstick situations, silly faces and people being hit in the gonads. Stay for the closing credits for an extra bit of English.
